Nambata Tatsuoki (1905-1997) walked through his own path in the Avant-garde movement both before and after WWII. He built his very own unique style of painting full of life with clear colors, continuous motifs and curves befitting a poet of figurative expression.
We first commissioned Nambata to create a copperplate print back in 1977, only two years after the successive deaths of his two sons, who were also artists. Despite his grief, he welcomed us warmly and worked enthusiastically on the copperplate prints we brought to him, producing one masterpiece after the other.

Back in 1995, Toki-no-Wasuremono opened in Minami-Aoyama, the first exhibition was “Black and White Line Engravings: Copperplate Print Selection 1” (Featured artists: Hasegawa Kiyoshi, Nambata Tatsuoki, Q Ei, Komai Tetsuro) .
At that time, Nambata was the first living artist to exhibit in our gallery.
The first edition of Toki-no-Wasuremono, published that same year, was
Collection of Nambata Tatsuoki Copperplate Prints: Remembering Ancient Times, and over the course of 20 years. we as publishers, have been able to witness the birth of many prints.
In this 120th anniversary of his birth exhibition, with the help of his family, we will be exhibiting around 25 oil paintings, watercolors and prints.
A larger-scale retrospective of Nmnbata Tatsuoki is currently being held at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery (until October 2nd). We hope you take a look at it as well.
